If You’re Reading This on Christmas Day, This Is for You

Christmas Close Up

If you’re reading this on Christmas Day, let me start with this:

You’re doing okay.
Even if today doesn’t look the way Christmas is “supposed” to look.

Maybe your day is busy and loud. Maybe it’s quiet. Maybe it’s somewhere in between — a bit flat, a bit nice, a bit strange. Christmas has a funny way of amplifying whatever we’re already feeling, and that can be exhausting.

So consider this a small pause. A seat at the kitchen bench. A warm drink moment.

This is for you.

Christmas Doesn’t Have One Correct Shape

Some people woke up to full houses, noise, chaos, and overcooked roasts.
Some woke up alone, by choice or by circumstance.
Some are working today. Some are resting. Some are counting the hours until it’s over. Some wish it would slow down.

All of it counts.

Christmas isn’t a performance. It’s not a checklist. And it definitely isn’t a measure of how loved, successful, or “together” you are.

If today is simple — that’s enough.
If today is messy — that’s allowed.
If today is just… fine — that’s more than okay.

What You Eat Today Is Not a Moral Decision

Let’s talk food, because this is Plan4One — and because Christmas has a habit of turning meals into emotional events.

If you cooked something special today: lovely.
If you reheated leftovers: perfect.
If you ate toast, eggs, soup, pavlova, cheese and crackers, or dessert first — congratulations, you ate.

There is no “proper” Christmas meal when you’re cooking for one. There’s just food that feels manageable, comforting, or familiar.

Eating well today might mean:

  • Something warm
  • Something easy
  • Something that didn’t create dishes
  • Or something you genuinely felt like eating

That still counts as nourishment.

You Don’t Owe Anyone Festive Energy

You don’t owe cheer.
You don’t owe gratitude posts.
You don’t owe explanations for how you’re spending today.

If Christmas feels joyful — enjoy it.
If it feels heavy — be gentle with yourself.
If it feels neutral — let it be neutral.

Rest is allowed. Quiet is allowed. Logging off is allowed. So is watching terrible television, going for a walk, or having a nap at 2pm.

There’s no prize for pushing through.

A Gentle Reminder (Especially for Solo Eaters)

Cooking for one — especially on days like today — isn’t a failure or a placeholder. It’s a skill. It’s self-respect. It’s knowing how to look after yourself without excess, waste, or pressure.

Whether today involved a “recipe” or not, feeding yourself is an act of care. And that matters — on Christmas Day and every other day of the year.

If No One Has Said It to You Yet Today

Merry Christmas.
I’m glad you’re here.
You’re not behind.
You’re not doing it wrong.
And you don’t need to earn rest, comfort, or kindness — especially today.

However this day looks for you, I hope it includes at least one small moment that feels okay. Sometimes, that’s more than enough.
