Winter Wellness Tip
Lean beef is naturally rich in protein, iron and zinc. Broccoli contributes fibre and vitamin C, making this combination a great winter dinner for busy singles looking for a balanced meal.
Ingredients
For the Bowl
- 150g lean beef rump steak or stir-fry strips
- 1½ cups broccoli florets
- ¾ cup cooked brown rice
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
For the Sauce
- 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
- 1 tablespoon reduced-salt soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon water
- ½ teaspoon cornflour
Optional Garnish
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
- Sliced spring onion
- Chilli flakes
How To Make It
- Cook the brown rice according to packet instructions if not already prepared.
- In a small bowl, combine garlic, ginger, soy sauce, honey, vinegar, water and cornflour. Stir until smooth.
- Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Add the broccoli and cook for 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently. Add a tablespoon of water if needed to help it soften slightly.
- Remove broccoli and set aside.
- Add the beef to the hot pan in a single layer.
- Cook for 2–3 minutes on the first side without moving it.
- Stir and continue cooking for another 2–3 minutes until the beef is browned and cooked through. For safety, ensure no pink remains if using stir-fry strips.
- Return the broccoli to the pan.
- Pour over the sauce and stir continuously for 1–2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats everything evenly.
- Serve immediately over warm brown rice.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onion if desired.
Plan4One Shortcut
Microwave brown rice cups are perfectly acceptable here.
Keeping a few in the pantry can turn this recipe into a genuine “home-cooked dinner in under 25 minutes” meal.
Easy Swaps

- Freezer: Up to 2 months
- Reheat: Microwave until piping hot throughout
Budget Meter
Budget Friendly ★★★☆☆
Beef is one of the more expensive proteins, but using a single portion and bulking out the meal with broccoli and rice keeps the overall cost reasonable.
The Reality Check
This is the meal for those nights when takeaway is calling your name but your budget is suggesting otherwise.
It delivers the flavours of a good stir-fry, fills the kitchen with the smell of garlic and ginger, and leaves you with the satisfaction of having cooked something genuinely good for yourself.
That’s a pretty decent way to end a winter day.
